Correctional services dept dismisses rumours that Karabo Mokoena's killer has escaped from prison
- The correctional services department rubbished rumours that Sandile Mantsoe was not in prison.
- It said Mantsoe was locked up in a Mpumalanga prison for the killing of Karabo Mokoena.
- He was sentenced to 32 years behind bars.
The correctional services department on Monday rubbished claims that Sandile Mantsoe, who was sentenced to 32 years in jail for killing Karabo Mokoena, had escaped from prison.
Department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said Mantsoe was locked up at Standerton Prison in Mpumalanga.
"Sandile is in prison," Nxumalo said after Twitter users claimed they had seen Mantsoe outside of prison.
Nxumalo warned that these allegations could "give more gravitas to a fake story".
"It has to be dismissed as misinformation."
In 2018, Mantsoe was handed an effective 32-year sentence for killing his girlfriend, Mokoena.
Her charred remains were discovered in an open veld in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, after family and friends launched a search following her disappearance.
Mantsoe, a married father of three, had reportedly been in a romantic relationship with Mokoena since October 2016.
He denied killing Mokoena and said he had disposed of her body when he came home and found that she had committed suicide.
